1. Welcome to FieldScout
FieldScout helps you look up equipment information, draw a site sketch, calculate field quantities, and save the work to an address.
Your country and province or territory are set during checkout. The tools and units follow your account automatically. If the account details are wrong, contact Support before saving work under that jurisdiction.
1.1 Start with the task
Open Tools, then choose what you need:
- HVAC Age Finder: Find a supported manufacture date or production period from equipment details.
- Refrigerator / Freezer: Look up model energy information and capacity, and check a serial number for available manufacture-date information.
- Site Sketch: Draw the layout, label measured dimensions, and mark equipment or observations.
- Building Science Calculators: Work out areas, volume, insulation quantities, airflow and diagnostic values.
You can use a tool before creating a Job. When you want to keep a result, give it an Item name and save it to the correct address. Use Jobs for an Individual account or Agency Jobs for work shared with your authorized agency teammates.
1.2 Read the units beside each field
Canadian tools use metric measurements. Enter the units requested by the field: for example, metres for length, square metres for area, litres per second for airflow, and pascals for pressure. Refrigerator capacity is displayed in litres.
Check the result's assumptions and source details where shown. Keep unknown measurements unknown, and retain any uncertainty with the saved work.
1.3 Set up your Canadian account
- Open Canadian signup and choose Individual for your own work or Agency for a team.
- Choose Monthly or Annual billing. Prices are in Canadian dollars. For an Agency, include the Agency Lead when choosing Total paid users.
- Enter your account and billing details, then select your province or territory and timezone. Check these before continuing; your tools use the saved account settings.
- Select Review order, check the plan and recurring total, and continue to secure payment.
- Follow the account-setup email to set your password, then use Canadian sign-in to open Tools.
You can start with a lookup, sketch, or calculation. Create a Job when you have work to keep for an address.
2. Jobs: organizing saved work
Open in FieldScout: Jobs / Agency Jobs · All Field Tools
A Job keeps named tool results and sketches together for one address. Individual accounts keep their own Jobs. Authorized agency teammates work from the same agency Jobs.
2.1 Create or find the address
- Open Jobs or Agency Jobs.
- Use Find an address to look for existing work first.
- To start a new address, open Create a Job, enter the street address, city and Postal code, and choose the Home type.
- Select Create Job. If the address already has a Job, choose the saved address and open it so the work stays together.
The Job uses the province or territory saved for your account. A Canadian postal code can be entered with or without its space, such as K1A 0B1.
2.2 Save a result
On an equipment lookup or calculator result, expand Save to Job, enter an Item name, choose the Job address or Save to new Job, and select Save. Wait for the success message.
For Site Sketch, use Save sketch when starting from Tools or Save now when working in an initialized Job sketch. Check its save status before leaving.
Open the address and its Saved results to review or continue work. A Job can hold several separately named results or sketches. Work opened from a Job stays with that address.
2.3 Correct problems before leaving
If a save reports that the Job changed, preserve your unsaved notes and reopen the current saved work before trying again. A visible result, copied note or downloaded file does not confirm a Job save.
Delete Job permanently removes the Job and its linked working data from FieldScout. Check the address and your recordkeeping requirements before confirming. Files already downloaded remain separate copies.
3. HVAC Age Finder
Open in FieldScout: HVAC Age Finder · All Field Tools
Find manufacture dates and ages for heating and cooling equipment and water heaters using the details on the nameplate.
Brand choices include current and historical equipment with documented Canadian availability. If the nameplate brand is missing, keep it unchanged and check with the manufacturer; do not choose a similar brand.
3.1 Check the equipment
- Choose a Common brands button or select the brand from All brands (A–Z).
- Select the Product type. Enter MODEL # when available and complete any additional details requested by the page.
- Enter the complete SERIAL # from the nameplate.
- Select Check age.
- Read Manufactured, Age, Confidence, and the notes together. Open Brand guidance and references, then Source basis, when shown.
Keep the precision shown. A year-only result remains a year; a production week can give an approximate age. If several years are possible, keep those alternatives until equipment records or manufacturer confirmation resolve them. An undetermined date should stay undetermined.
Age is one piece of equipment information. Use it alongside condition, diagnostics, efficiency evidence and the requirements of the work.
3.2 Save the result
Expand Save to Job, enter an Item name, choose the correct address or Save to new Job, then select Save. Reopen it from the Job's Saved results.
Age at lookup stays tied to the lookup date. Run a new lookup when you need a current age. Example lookups are practice previews; replace their details with the actual equipment before checking or saving field evidence.
3.3 If the result needs another check
Recheck similar-looking characters, the full model, product type and nameplate brand. Read any request for more equipment details. If no supported date is available, contact the manufacturer with the complete model and serial. The tool accepts manually entered details; it does not read a nameplate photograph.
4. Refrigerator / Freezer Lookup
Open in FieldScout: Refrigerator / Freezer · All Field Tools
Look up listed annual electricity use and capacity for a refrigerator or freezer model available in the Canadian reference listings. Add its serial number for available manufacture-date information.
4.1 Look up the appliance
- Select the nameplate brand from Common brands or All brands (A–Z).
- Enter the complete MODEL #, including the suffix shown on the appliance.
- Add SERIAL # (optional) when you need manufacture-date information.
- Use Type to narrow the results if needed, then select Look up appliance.
- Compare the returned models, configuration, capacity in litres, annual kWh/year, and source details with the actual appliance.
The Canadian listings have limited coverage. If your model is missing, verify its energy information with the manufacturer or the applicable product listing. Do not use a similar model's rating as if it described the appliance in front of you.
4.2 Keep model and serial results separate
The model result provides source-listed energy information. The serial result provides a manufacture date or production period when supported. A serial date does not confirm an energy-model match.
Expand Source and model details before recording a value. Capacity follows the source's stated measurement. A listed annual energy value is a reference rating, not a measurement of electricity used in this home. A listing alone does not establish replacement eligibility or program approval.
When a date is uncertain, keep the alternatives or undetermined result. Saved Age at lookup remains tied to the original lookup date.
4.3 History and Job saves
View history opens recent lookups. To attach one to an address, expand Save to Job, enter an Item name, choose the Job address or Save to new Job, and select Save.
If the page reports that history was not saved, retry when storage is available before saving the result to a Job. Seeing a result in History does not mean it is attached to an address. Reopen confirmed saves from the Job's Saved results.
5. Site Sketch
Open in FieldScout: Site Sketch · All Field Tools
Draw a building layout, mark openings and equipment, and label your measured dimensions and observations. Each Job can hold several named sketches.
5.1 Start drawing
- Open Site Sketch from Tools or a Job. Check the address, sketch name and Active floor. A new blank sketch starts on 1st Floor.
- Select Wall and draw a segment. Wall stays active so you can continue drawing.
- Choose Select / move, select the object, and open Selected object.
- Enter its Map label and Measurement. Expand Notes and advanced details when needed, then choose Done.
- Add doors, windows, bypasses, Fan/HVAC markers and a compass as needed.
Use Select / move before editing existing objects and Pan to move the view. On a narrow screen, scroll the drawing toolbar to reach more tools.
5.2 Enter metric measurements
Follow the hint beside the selected object's field.
| Measurement | Example |
|---|---|
| Wall length | 10 or 10 m; both record ten metres |
| Door or window dimensions | 900 x 2100 mm, or dimensions labelled in cm or m |
| Area | 2 m² |
| Fan airflow | 50 L/s |
| Insulation value | RSI 7 |
These are practice examples. Enter measurements from the actual site and leave unknown values blank. If an entry is invalid, the inspector keeps it open with a message so you can correct it.
The canvas is a drawing aid. Grid spacing, zoom and line placement do not establish a measured distance. Record the field dimension in Measurement; move or resize the line separately to adjust the drawing.
5.3 Floors and view
Use Floor setup to add, rename, duplicate or reorder floors. Check the active level before drawing. Removing a floor removes its contents; the last floor cannot be removed.
Use Fit sketch, Fit page, Fit width and zoom to change the view. Use Undo in Files after an unintended edit, then inspect the result.
5.4 Save and reopen
From Tools, choose Save sketch, enter a name, select the address or new-Job option, and confirm. From an initialized Job sketch, use Save now and check the saved status. Online changes may autosave after the Job sketch has a name, but always confirm the latest status before leaving.
Open saved sketches through the Job's Saved results or Files > Saved sketches. Use Create another Site Sketch for a separate version such as proposed work instead of overwriting existing conditions.
If a save reports that the Job or sketch changed, preserve unsaved notes or download a copy before reloading. Do not overwrite a newer saved record with an older screen.
5.5 Recovery and outputs
History & files provides device recovery and JSON transfer. Download JSON retains an editable copy; protect any property information in that file. Load JSON is available in unsaved Tools mode. For a Job sketch, reopen the saved sketch from its address.
On desktop, open Print & export, choose Active floor or All floors, then use Export image or Print PDF. These controls are hidden on tablet and mobile. Check every floor, label and recorded dimension before using the output. Grid-unit estimates in a printout are not measured metres.
A recovery copy, downloaded file, image or printout is separate from a confirmed Job save.
6. Building Science Calculators
Open in FieldScout: Building Science Calculators · All Field Tools
Calculate field quantities from your measurements, copy the field note, or keep a named result with a Job.
6.1 Run a calculator
- Select a calculator from the directory.
- Choose an input method when offered and enter the required values in the units shown. Canadian entries use metric measurements.
- Select Run calculator. Follow any linked field message to correct an entry.
- Review Result values, the File note, Warnings, Assumptions, and Source and basis where shown.
- Use Copy note or expand Save to Job, name the result, choose the address and select Save.
6.2 Choose the calculation
| Calculator | What to check |
|---|---|
| Volume Calculator | Enter metres or square metres as labelled; the result is cubic metres. |
| Attic and Knee Wall Area | Choose the matching geometry and check the measured dimensions. |
| Insulation Depth Estimate | Use RSI and the requested material values; depth is displayed in millimetres. |
| Insulation Bag Counter | Use square metres and the manufacturer's matching coverage information. |
| Airflow Pressure Conversion | Enter airflow in L/s and pressure in Pa; keep the original test readings. |
| L/s at 50 Pa to ACH50 | Use the airflow and building volume for the same measured boundary. |
| Leakage Reduction Comparison | Compare compatible baseline and final or target readings in L/s. |
| RSI and U-factor Conversion | Check which value you are entering; U-factor is shown in W/m²·K. |
| Kilowatts / Watts | Convert the stated equipment capacity between kW and W. |
| Total External Static Pressure | Follow the equipment test procedure and enter pressures in Pa. |
| Pressure Pan Review | Keep the individual pressure readings and relevant test conditions. |
An estimate does not replace the project's specifications, manufacturer instructions or field verification. For insulation, check the material, density, coverage and installation requirements before ordering or installing.
6.3 Save, reopen and change inputs
Copy note copies text; it does not save a result to the Job. Confirm the named save and reopen it under the address's Saved results.
A reopened result preserves the saved calculation. Use Edit inputs and rerun for a new scenario. If measurements change, run the calculator again before saving. Keep source measurements and assumptions with the result so another person can follow the field record.
7. Troubleshooting: first checks
| Problem | Start here |
|---|---|
| Sign-in or setup link is not working | Use the latest account email and Canadian sign-in. Request a new link through Forgot password if needed. |
| Account province or territory is wrong | Contact Support before saving work under that jurisdiction. Account jurisdiction is set during checkout. |
| A measurement will not validate | Check the units, sign, allowed range and selected input method. Keep unknown values blank where permitted. |
| Equipment lookup has no supported result | Check the full model, serial, brand and product type. Use manufacturer records to resolve missing or uncertain information. |
| A result is missing from the Job | Check the destination address, item name and save confirmation. A copied note or lookup-history entry is separate from a Job save. |
| A save reports newer work | Preserve unsaved notes, reopen the current Job or sketch, and review the changes before trying again. |
| A sketch opens on the wrong level | Check Active floor and the named sketch under Files. |
| A session expires | Sign in again. Preserve unsaved entries before refreshing or leaving the page. |
If the problem continues, contact Support with the tool name, action you were taking, and the message shown. Avoid sending customer information that is not needed to explain the issue.
